PopCultHQ’s Comic Book Review: Animosity #1

Animosity 1Whenever I pick up a new series, specifically a number one issue (be it in print or digital for review), there are a number of things I look for as a reviewer: story itself, character development and dynamics, artists employed, and the story’s progression, just to name a few. Animosity outshines is every aspect and has catapulted this title to a top contender for title of the year from PopCultHQ.

Marguerite Bennett’s depiction of a world where the animals essentially come to life is a unique and captivating story. Creatures begin to speak the words we often think they might be saying but now with more clarity and a revealed intent. The animals responding to their “masters” vocally, experiencing struggles in life we humans experience, or attempting to exact revenge for the years of mistreatment. Looks like they’ve finally had enough!

These near-anthropomorphized animals gives us a harsh reality and reflection of the way we view and treats those of the animal kingdom. Some of the most touching are the heartfelt moments between a young girl named Jesse and her dog Sandor. Bennett has done a magnificent job at capturing the unconditional love which a pet has for their owner, so much that it genuinely tugs at your heart while you are reading.

Animosity 2Rafael de Latorre does a remarkable job in defining the look and feel for Animosity. His vivid imagery of these animals who have “awoken” is the perfect compliment to the story Bennett has developed. Partnered with colorist Rob Schwager, who adds an additional layer of excellence to the book with the depth and prominence established in his work, this duo is the perfect team-up to deliver such high-quality artwork for Animosity which is well above the standard fare in comic books today.

Marguerite Bennett has created a brilliant story destined for a successful run. The narrative is solid and the concept is magnificent. AfterShock Comics has struck gold with the addition of Bennett’s Animosity to their already stellar lineup of titles. It’s rare for me to want to add a new comic book series to my pull list after one issue but Animosity is a rare gem that delivers an all-around appeal that is not only a must-read, but a must-own!

One day, the Animals woke up.
They started thinking. They started talking.
They started taking revenge.

Now, a dog and his girl are trying to get away–out of New York City, and all the way to San Francisco, to the only person who might be able to protect and save her.

From the writer of INSEXTS, A-FORCE, and BOMBSHELLS and the artist of SUPERZERO, comes a new kind of road trip, a new kind of black comedy, and a new kind of coming-of-age.
